I came across you crying into an empty soda can.
I asked you what you were doing.
You said you were collecting tears,

I already had enough tears

I wonder what you would say if you could feel this cold burning in the pit of my stomach?
I wonder what you would do if you could hear the words that suffocate my breathing?
I wonder if you would cry if you saw me dying?
I wonder if it would hurt to sit and watch me crying?

If I was to reach to you and tell you everything inside of me
You would be told by someone to push me away,
And pushed away is all I would be.
Not someone who’s life plays hostage to thoughts of you.
Not someone who’s breath catches at the mention of your name.

I would not be me to you.
I would just be a bottle of shadows spilt across pages of time,
Blurring the years of painful ink scratches
That have been etched into your memory.

I don’t want to be the person who makes you hurt anymore.
So you can keep your canned tears,
And shower them upon the other one that loves you.

Because your compensating gestures
Just remind me
That this lack of love needs to be compensated for.
